I had the pleasure of visiting Rutland Middle School and working with the Media Specialist and students there. Although a bit under the weather, she graciously allowed me to ask a million questions. I also had the opportunity to meet with the media clerk and another educator. In the media center, I was able to observe and assist as students checked books in and out, brought equipment for issues, and browsed the shelves. I worked with one student in particular whose chrome book had a blank screen. Although it was an easy fix, I was impressed with this young man. He was able to teach me a thing or two! Also, while on site, I was able to visit a math class that used the IXL program for Math instruction. The math teacher also works as a science teacher and was currently working on a program that integrated Minecraft with Science instruction. The students were learning about the periodic table. Blending instruction with gaming was very engaging and really elevated the lesson. The lesson plan was not complete, but the progress was amazing. He provided a wonderful resource that I will share here: Plasma Games Next, I had the opportunity to visit with students creating power points for presentation in their business class. Also in the media center, I was able to speak at length with the media specialist about the challenges with engaging students in literacy. We discussed lessons that engage students in literacy. She created a lesson entitled, "Blind date with a book." Students are encouraged to select from books with the front and back covers bound in brown paper. Students read the book. They are only required to read 25 pages. They are asked thought provoking questions after reading at least 25 days. If they find they like the book, they may continue to read. They are rewarded for completing the book. Students receive a short survey and writing prompt after completing the book. She reports a positive student response thus far.
During my work week, I was super busy working on rosters for Winter, inventory, and student data analysis. I had to present for my department at the monthly meeting. Thankfully, I was able to assist with set up our newest computer carts in the media center. Midweek, I worked with our district intervention coach on a professional learning presentation. I was able to collaboratively work with her and glean her opinions on my workshop. As always, time flew by; however, we have plans to meet again as time permits. I also met and worked with my collaborator on the Digital Safety unit required for this practicum.
